What to do
Check your diary and mark a week where you have a clean break from functions or events that might derail your detox, such as weddings, birthdays or special occasion meals. Some people may experience a ‘cleansing’ reaction in the first few days of detox, including headaches or loose bowel movements. This is due to the sudden withdrawal of certain foods, in addition to stimulation of detoxifying organs. These symptoms should subside in 24 to 48 hours.
This is an oldie but goodie to kick start the digestion and cleanse the system. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon in a cup of hot water. Drink first thing in the morning before breakfast.
Aim to exercise for one hour daily. And not just any exercise – something that makes you pant and puff and raise a sweat like a spin class, jog along the beach, walking uphill, hot yoga or boxing. Vigorous exercise increases lymph flow and circulation to help sweat out toxins.
Aim to cut out the cooking process and eat mainly raw foods. Raw foods contain more nutrients and enzymes. Try adding fresh sprouts to a salad daily.
*Detox the mind:
While you’re detoxing the body, it’s good to clear the clutter from the mind too. Aim for 15 minutes of meditation per day. If you don’t know how to meditate, try belly breathing. Start by placing hands palm down on your lower belly. Breathe in through your nose, counting slowly to 3 or 4 counts. Feel your tummy rise with the breath. Breathe out just as slowly, allowing the belly to drop. Do this for 15 minutes daily.
Aim to drink three litres of fluid daily. This will help move the lymph and support kidney detoxification. Choose from pure spring water, fresh vegetable juice and herbal detox teas.
Foods to include in the plan
Your plan can include:
*Fruit – your plan can include any fruit including fresh and frozen. This includes apples, bananas, pears, oranges, grapefruit, satsumas, sultanas, raisins, pineapple, mango, kiwi fruit, strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, nectarines, peaches, melons, star fruit etc
*Fruit juice –homemade fruit juices or smoothies from fresh fruit.
*Vegetables – eat any vegetables including fresh, frozen or canned in water (without salt added). This includes carrots, onions, turnip, swede, sprouts, cabbage, peppers, mushrooms, sweetcorn, peppers, leeks, courgettes, broccoli, cauliflower, salad, tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions etc
*Beans and lentils – eat any beans, including those that have been dried or canned in water. This includes red kidney, haricot, cannellini, butter, chickpeas, black eye, pinto, red lentils, green lentils and brown lentils
*Oats – sprinkle oats over fresh fruit or use to make porridge, sweetened with honey and fresh fruit
*Potatoes – all types
*Brown rice and rice noodles
*Rye crackers, rice cakes and oatcakes
*Unsalted nuts – eat any including Brazil, peanuts, almonds, cashew, hazel nuts, macadamia, pecans, pine nuts, pistachio, walnuts etc
*Unsalted seeds – eat any including sunflower and pumpkin
*Extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, Coconut oil (unprocessed)
*Garlic, ginger and fresh herbs
*Ground black pepper
*Herbal or fruit teas
Foods to avoid during your detox
*Red meat, chicken, turkey and any meat products like sausages, burgers, and pate
*Milk, cheese, eggs, cream
*Butter and margarine
*Any food that contains wheat including bread, croissants, cereals, cakes, biscuits, pies, pastry, quiche,
battered or bread rumbed foods, etc
*Crisps and savoury snacks including salted nuts
*Chocolate, sweets, jam and sugar
*Processed foods, ready meals, ready-made sauces and takeaways
*Coffee and tea
*Sauces, pickles, shop bought salad dressing, mayonnaise
*Fizzy drinks and squashes, including diet versions
*Grains: wheat (bread, biscuits, cakes, pasta), rye, barley, oats, spelt and rice
Epsom Salt Bath
Epsom salt baths increase the magnesium level in the body, which is required for detoxifying cells. It also helps detoxify metals from the body. In addition, it will soothe body aches and pains.
*Mix one to two cups of Epsom salt in a bathtub filled with warm water.
*Soak in it for about 15 minutes.
*Do this up to three times per week.
Note: Epsom salt baths are generally not recommended for those suffering from high blood pressure and heart problems.
This simple therapy works as a great natural detox for the deep tissues in the body. It also fights issues like toothache, bad breath, and gum disease due to the antimicrobial effects of the oil used.
It is believed that this traditional Ayurvedic technique also provides relief from headaches, constipation, candida infections, congestion, cold sores, joint pains, and various other ailments. It needs to be followed first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach before you even brush your teeth.
*Swish one tablespoon of sesame oil or sunflower oil in your mouth like a mouthwash for 15 to 20 minutes, until the oil becomes thinner and turns milky and foamy.
*Spit it out and then rinse your mouth with water.
Do this daily at least for 15 days up to a month to see encouraging results.
Warning: Do not gargle or swallow the oil.
Turmeric is well-known for its medicinal and healing properties. It also detoxifies your liver, purifies the blood, and is beneficial for lung and colon health too. Plus, it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancerous effects.
Add one teaspoon of turmeric powder, juice from one lemon, a pinch of cayenne pepper and a little honey (to taste) to one cup of warm water. Drink this once daily for a few days or weeks.
Alternatively, boil two cups of water, add one-half teaspoon each of turmeric powder and dry ginger powder, and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Then strain the tea and add juice from half a lemon and one tablespoon of pure maple syrup. Drink this daily or a few times a week for a few weeks.
This is the most common way to detoxify your body. It helps rid the body of harmful toxins while providing a wealth of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.
Green smoothies include a number of green vegetables containing chlorophyll, which helps in detoxification and getting rid of heavy metals like those found in pesticides and industrial pollutants. Start your day with this green smoothie to provide energy and boost metabolism.
*Put one cup of kale (coarsely chopped), one green apple (coarsely chopped), one ripe banana and one-half cup of fresh parsley leaves in a blender. If you do not have kale then use collard greens.
*Blend the ingredients with about two and one-quarter or two and one-half cups of water.
Raw fruit and vegetable juices, such as that of apples, carrots, grapefruits, spinach, blueberries, oranges, cucumbers, beets, and lettuce, are highly beneficial for nourishing your body as well as removing harmful toxins.
Juices extracted from green vegetables are particularly beneficial because they contain chlorophyll, which aids in the removal of cancer-related toxins. Being loaded with nutrients, fresh juices also give a boost to your immune system.
You can simply drink a glass of raw fruit or vegetable juice two or three times a day or replace one meal daily with fresh juices. For a juice fast, drink five to six glasses of fresh fruit and vegetable juices daily for a few days.
In addition to juice from a single fruit or vegetable, you can create a juice blend by juicing five carrots, four celery stalks, one beet, one small apple, one small cucumber, and half a lemon. For better absorption of the nutrients, drink the juice slowly rather than quickly gulping it down.
Licorice root tea
Licorice root tea works as a good detox drink to cleanse the body of chemical contaminants. It will help cut sugar cravings, too; sugar tends to impede detox efforts. Plus, it has expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-allergic, immune-boosting, and soothing properties.
- Drink a cup of licorice root tea daily for a few days.
- Add one tablespoon of crushed licorice root and one teaspoon of ground ginger to one and one-half cups of boiling water. Let it simmer for five to 10 minutes. Finally, strain the solution and stir in one teaspoon of lemon juice. Drink this once daily for a few days.
Note: Do not take licorice root in excess as it may cause unwanted side effects like increasing blood pressure and sodium retention.
Stinging nettles are excellent for detoxifying the blood. The herb also works as a natural diuretic, encourages the elimination of inflammatory wastes, and stimulates the lymphatic system. Plus, it is packed with vitamins A, B complex, C and D, along with potassium, magnesium, iron, and chlorophyll.
- Boil one cup of water and put one teaspoon of dried nettle leaves in it.
- Cover and let it steep for 10 minutes.
- Drink this tea two or three times daily.
