We all know that breastfeeding is the best option for your little one. However, some women still pick formula over breast milk for comfort or for many other reasons. On the other hand, there are women who would love to breastfeed but they are not able to due to stress or a lack of support.
I want to focus today on the advantages of breastfeeding to convince women not to give up and get the necessary support from friends, professionals or other mums.

One of the main advantages is that breast milk helps protect little ones against infections through its antiviral and antibacterial agents. Studies show that breastfed babies have fewer respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and ear infections. Also, they are less likely to have eczema and diaper rash than bottle-fed babies. In addition, human milk is high in certain substances that are important in brain development (amino acid cysteine and certain fats). Cow’s milk is low in these substances.

It’s said that breastfed infants are better off than bottle-fed infants because they don’t have to wait long for their milk. Breast milk is available anytime, anywhere and always at the right temperature, which makes it easy for mum. A bottle fed baby may have to wait for his bottle to be prepared and warmed, and then it may be too cold or too hot.
Breast milk is also easier to digest than cows milk, as waiting may cause distress to babies.
Breast milk is free. There is no need to spend time and money to buy and prepare bottles. It’s also easier when you travel, as you don’t need to worry about refrigeration while travelling.

Immediate nursing after birth is also beneficial for the mother. It helps release oxytocin, which helps to contract the uterus, expel the placenta, and reduce excessive bleeding.
Although I highly recommend breastfeeding, it’s totally your decision. If you don’t feel happy with the idea you may not be very successful. Studies show that a woman’s attitude towards breastfeeding affects milk supply. If you don’t breastfeed your baby it’s important to hold the baby while feeding. Studies have shown that it helps to digest the milk better.
Remember if you choose not to breastfeed, or are unable to do so, it is yet possible to give your baby good nutrition and good mothering.
